Today’s SOTD is “Race for the Prize”, the first single off of The Flaming Lip’s 1999 album The Soft Bulletin.
Why This Song? Why Today? Over the weekend the Lips announced they had rewritten this song in support of their hometown Oklahoma City Thunder, who are currently facing the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. The new version of the song, called “Thunder Up”, features lots of additional chants of “Thunder Up!” and unfortunately kind of shines light on the disparity between Wayne Coyne’s voice in 1999 and 2012. Really, unless you’re a die-hard Thunder fan looking for ways to distract yourself before tonight’s crucial Game 2, you’re best off sticking with the original.
