Two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning has the look of a goober. It’s an undeniable fact that is at aesthetic odds with his gritty, determined and superb play for the Giants. Does Eli have his moments or what, though? We’ve seen them in the Big Game and oddly enough we saw this week on Saturday Night Live.
It’s always a big-risk, big-reward move to make an athlete the host at Studio 8H. When it goes wrong, it goes really wrong. Fans need only think back to Charles Barkley’s turn earlier this season as a recent example of just that. But athletes can also bring a different, more playful element to the show, and that was just the case with Manning.
The writers played with that gooberishness of his just enough to give this week’s episode some great moments. It wasn’t spectacular from end to end, but it was pretty darn good, something that fits nicely with Manning’s on-field persona.
