I don’t know if you knew this about me, but I can’t get enough of AMC’s Breaking Bad. So you think I’d be excited about the fact that Sony is pushing for a total of six seasons instead of the initially intended five, right? I’m not so sure …
The father of the show, Vince Gilligan, made it pretty clear in previous interviews that he wanted to end the show after five seasons because of the storyline he had already mapped out. When a main character is introduced in the first episode as having a looming expiration date — Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and his advanced lung cancer — it has to be resolved in a reasonable amount of time.
Breaking Bad is one of few shows that have been consistently amazing. I have yet to be disappointed with any season. The longer it’s around, the more likely it is to over-ripen.
If Gilligan actually feels like he can keep the show fresh and compelling for an additional season, I’m all for it. More Breaking Bad makes me a happy camper. I just don’t want it to get stale, especially given how strong it has been so far.
Trust me, I will keep you posted as things develop. If they can extend the show without diminishing its integrity, then bring it on, but if not, here’s hoping they cut it off after five seasons.
