What’s the only way to get a fantasy/comic book nerd like yours truly interested in a Thor sequel after this May’s disappointing first entry in the franchise? If you’re Marvel, it’s apparently to leak news that you’re in talks with Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk.

Game of Thrones director Brian KirkMission almost accomplished. I’ve made no secret of my love for Game of Thrones — it might just be the best show on television right now. And it’s a natural fit for Kirk. The Norse mythology of Thor dovetails nicely with the seven kingdoms of Westeros, content-wise.

Here are the only two problems: (a.) I suspect people just don’t care as much about Thor as they do, say, Iron Man or Captain America. He’s a fringe Marvel character and the first film in the series did nothing to change that status. And (b.) it’s not like the first Thor was lacking in the director’s chair with Kenneth Branagh at the helm.

As ScreenJunkies points out, an R rating for the sequel would go a long way toward further heightening my interest. For now, the concept of Thor 2 remains mostly a yawn.
