True birders appreciate birds big and small, and I am no exception.  But seriously, I love massive birds because they are badass, and I’m not just talking about the eagles and falcons of the world .  Of equal beauty, grace, and stunning hunting ability are our friends of the heron world. I hereby present a crescendo of heron highlights, culminating with one of the coolest bird hunting techniques the world has ever seen.

Let’s start with the classic king of the heron world, the Great Blue Heron.  I present to you, dear reader, a triumvirate of unstoppable video evidence that demonstrates the graceful and excessive killing power of this wading warrior:

Any animal that kills rats is OK in my book and this peck, murder, and swallow technique is no exception, though somewhat disgusting.

Herons are indeed amazing for their versatility.  While they’re traditionally ocean and bay birds, they can occupy any terrain with fantastic mastery.  Here you will note the domination of Canada like they are the Omega Force.  RIP John Candy.

As always, HD video evidence demonstrates the true grace of these birds though. Also how the hell did that camera get in that tree (I’m guessing a very, very committed videographer)?

Next up is the beautiful Great Egret.  We’ll keep it simple here.  Their agility and smoothness of flight is equaled by their hunting prowess.

Said grace:

Said hunting prowess:

Thank you slow motion.

Herons aren’t just about beauty though, they have the brains to go with the looks.  Check out this incredible hunting technique from the Green Heron:

Careful though, you may need to take cover.  This technique is dangerously awesome.

Yeah I have to agree with you, that is re-god-damn-diculous, though not entirely surprising because birds rule.

As always, keep your binoculars to the sky.
